NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in every living cell and is considered one of the most critical molecules in cellular metabolism. It functions as a central electron carrier in redox reactions (accepting and donating electrons) and serves as a required substrate for a family of enzymes — including sirtuins (SIRT1–7) and PARPs — that regulate DNA repair, gene expression, stress response, and longevity-associated pathways.
NAD+ levels decline dramatically with age — by as much as 50% between ages 40 and 60 in some tissue compartments — and this decline has been proposed as a mechanistic contributor to aging-associated metabolic dysfunction, mitochondrial deterioration, and impaired stress response. The Sinclair Lab (Harvard), Verdin Lab (Gladstone), and others have published extensively on NAD+ biology and aging.
Research-grade NAD+ for in vitro studies differs from oral NAD+ precursor supplements (NMN, NR) in that it is the direct coenzyme form. For laboratory cell culture and enzyme assay applications, direct NAD+ is the appropriate research reagent — it does not require conversion by cellular enzymes before it can serve as a substrate.
